AlternC's history

Altern.org

Valentin Lacambre Valentin Lacambre, who created altern.org (a free french hosting and email provider), told us about AlternC's project story :

"Altern started in 1992 as an Internet access service, by french minitel and phone. I had many friends thanks to this project and they asked me to provide them with a hosting service for their web sites. Unfortunately, those friends where incompatible with 'ftp', so I needed a simple way to manage websites. Altern.org opened in 1995 and it allowed anyone to build and host a website easily. The daily managment was made by web forms."

So, the idea of easy website managment started from 'altern.org', this managment was bound to be accessible to non-experts users.

Altern children

Some years and fifty thousand friends later, altern.org closed (I was under the pressure of the people who wanted to make my friends silent...). So my hosted members became orphans without anything else than good expensive professionnal hosting services. So I helped other fools to open something equivalent to altern.org : I gave them help and the software I used.

ouvaton, l'Apinc (apinc.org) and Lautre Net (lautre.net) was born from this cloning process ... The software I used for altern.org was completely rewritten by developpers from Lautre.Net."

And then, AlternC was born. Thanks to Benjamin Sonntag and Jérome Moinet, we rewrite a complete and brans new hosting service software, based on the same philosophy : easy to install, easy to use. AlternC was using free software, so it will be free too.
